THE BBC AND BUZZFEED TALK TO A
WHISTLEBLOWER THAT SAID THERE COULD BE AN ISSUE WITH
MATCH FIXING IN TENNIS. “OVER THE LAST DECADE, SIXTEEN
PLAYERS WHO HAVE RANKED IN THE TOP FIFTY HAVE BEEN REPEATEDLY
FLAGGED TO THE TENNIS INTEGRITY UNIT OVER SUSPICIONS THAT THEY HAVE THROWN MATCHES.” THE BIG ISSUE WITH THIS STORY IS
THAT THE TIU THAT THIS STORY, AND DID NOT DO FURTHER
INVESTIGATIONS TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS MATCH FIXING WAS NOT HAPPENING. ESSENTIALLY THERE ARE THESE BIG
GAMBLERS THAT ARE ALLEGEDLY PAYING UP TO $50,000 TO TENNIS PLAYERS TO BASICALLY
THROW OFF THE MATCH. I’M DEDICATED $50,000, AND I WANT YOU TO PURPOSEFULLY
LOSE THE MATCH. OKAY? AND SO, BUZZFEED AND BBC DID NOT
RELEASE NAMES OF SPECIFIC PEOPLE, BUT THEY DO HAVE SOME
PRETTY DAMNING EVIDENCE, AND SOME DAMNING FILES AND
DOCUMENTS THAT INDICATE THAT THIS IS GOING ON. “ALL OF THE PLAYERS, INCLUDING
WINNERS OF THE GLAND ñ WINNERS OF GRAND SLAM TITLES, WERE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE COMPETING.” SO EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS
HARD-CORE EVIDENCE AGAINST THE PEOPLE, THIS ENTITY DID NOT
ACTUALLY GO AFTER THEM AND DO FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS. “THE DOCUMENTS WE HAVE OBTAINED
TO SHOW THE INQUIRY FOUND BETTING SYNDICATES IN RUSSIA,
NORTHERN ITALY AND SICILY MAKING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF
POUNDS BETTING ON MATCHES INVESTIGATORS THOUGHT
TO BE FIXED. 3
OF THESE MATCHES WET WIMBLEDON. ANY CONFIDENTIAL REPORT FOR THE
TENNIS AUTHORITIES IN 2008, THE INQUIRY TEAM SAID
TWENTY-EIGHT PLAYERS INVOLVED IN THESE MATCHES SHOULD
BE INVESTIGATED, BUT THE FINDINGS WERE NEVER FOLLOWED UP. TENNIS INTRODUCED A NEW
ANTICORRUPTION CODE IN 2009, BUT AFTER TAKING LEGAL ADVICE WERE
TOLD PREVIOUS CORRUPTION OFFENSES COULD NOT BE PURSUED.” I THINK THIS IS REALLY
INTERESTING. YOU SAID $50,000, SO, FOR MAYBE A LOW-LEVEL
TENNIS PLAYER THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY, AND THAT IT MAY BE WORTH
I GUESS THROWING YOUR CAREER 4. BUT FOR SOME OF THE TOP PLAYERS,
PEOPLE THAT WERE APPROACHED, ESPN SAID NOVAK DJOKOVIC WAS
APPROACHED TO THROW ONE OF HIS GAMES FOR $2000 ñ $200,000. THAT SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF MONEY,
BUT THIS GUY IS WITH MILLIONS. WHY ARE PEOPLE POTENTIALLY
RUINING THEIR ENTIRE CAREERS FOR SUCH A SMALL AMOUNT? COMPARED TO THE BIG PICTURE. I STARTED TALKING TO SOME OF THE
TYT SPORTS GUYS, AND THEY THINK MAYBE IT IS BECAUSE TENNIS IS
KNOWN AS A GENTLEMAN’S GAME, AND IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE THIS
PRESTIGIOUS THING WHERE THERE IS NO FUNNY BUSINESS, AND SO THAT IS WHY THEY DID NOT INVESTIGATE
IT FURTHER IN 2008. I WONDER IF IT IS BECAUSE
THEY DON’T WANT THAT NEGATIVE MEDIA ATTENTION. CLEARLY THERE IS AN
EMBARRASSMENT SITUATION IS HAPPENING. IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, TENNIS,
AND MAYBE GOLF, OUR SPORTS WHERE THERE IS A TREMENDOUS
AMOUNT OF PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY THAT YOU CAN HAVE IF
YOU ARE, YOU KNOW, CORRUPT, OR ARE GOING TO FIX OR THROW THE
GAME, BECAUSE IT IS VERY MUCH ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL, AND NOT
HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT THE TEAM. IF YOU ARE PLAYING TENNIS, IT IS
VERY EASY TO SHOW THAT YOU MADE A STUMBLE, OR A MISTAKE, AND EXPLAIN IT AWAY. I THINK MAYBE THAT IS WHY
PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO TAKE THIS RISK, BECAUSE YOU CAN HAVE A
TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF, WELL I JUST STUMBLED, AND IT
LOOKS VERY CONVINCING. AND ALSO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE
NOT THE TOP PLAYERS, THEY ACTUALLY DON’T MAKE THAT MUCH MONEY, SO MAYBE A PAYOUT LIKE
$50,000 WOULD BE A LOT FOR THEM. BUT FOR THE TOP PLAYERS, IT
STILL SEEMS KIND OF CRAZY. IT DOES SEEM COUNTERINTUITIVE. IF WE’RE TALKING 25 MILLION,
MAYBE IT MAKES MORE SENSE. MAYBE IT IS EASIER TO THROW
A MATCH WITH THOUGH I’M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT
THE INCENTIVE IS. YOU HAVE TO DO A COST-BENEFIT
ANALYSIS IF YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE OF ANY
SORT, BECAUSE YOU ARE RIGHT, YOU ARE THROWING
YOUR CAREER AWAY. SO I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHETHER
THERE ARE OTHER INSTANCES INVOLVED, MAYBE THERE ARE OTHER FACTORS INVOLVED. MAYBE THEY ARE OVER THE TENNIS
THING, MAYBE THE THEATER CAREER DWINDLING, SO THEY DECIDE
TO MAKE THESE DECISIONS. OR MAYBE THEY DON’T THINK
THEY ARE GOING TO GET CAUGHT. IN TENNIS YOU ARE BARELY ALLOWED
TO CLAP LOUDLY, THIS IS A PRETTY BIG CLAP. THE LADY THINK THAT TENNIS IS
NOT GOING TO MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF THIS. I’LL LOSE, I’LL MAKE A COMEBACK,
I’LL GET AN EXTRA $50,000. MARK PHILLIPS, A BET
INVESTIGATOR RELEASED A STATEMENT, SAYING “THE EVIDENCE IS REALLY STRONG. THERE APPEARED TO BE A REALLY
GOOD CHANCE TO GET IT IN THE BUD AND GET A STRONG DETERRENT OUT
THERE TO ROOT OUT THE MAIN BAD APPLES.” UNFORTUNATELY THAT
IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED. THAT VERY MUCH EXPLAINS THAT
NO ONE IS WILLING TO GO INTO IT. SO WHY NOT THROW A GAME? THE CHANCES OF YOU GETTING
CAUGHT ARE SO MINIMAL. THEY SAID THAT PEOPLE WERE
APPROACHING THEM IN A HOTEL ROOMS BEFORE THE MATCH, SO MAYBE
THERE ISN’T A TRACEABLE WAY TO SEE IN SOME OF THESE CASES. THE OFFICIALS BEHIND TENNIS
HAVE THE ABILITY TO ACCESS THESE RECORDS, SHOULD THEY
CHOOSE TO INVESTIGATE, BUT IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THEY ARE NOT
INTERESTED IN INVESTIGATING. WHENEVER THERE IS MONEY
INVOLVED, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WERE EASILY GET CORRUPTED. IT IS UP TO THOSE WHO DO
OVERSIGHT, WHO ARE DOING THE INVESTIGATIONS, TO DO THEIR
JOBS, AND THEY DID NOT DO THEIR JOBS ACCORDING TO HIS
EXPOS… BY BBC AND BUZZFEED. WE WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS, BUT IT
SOUNDS LIKE IT IS A VIRUS THAT MIGHT IMPACT THE TENNIS WORLD. IT MIGHT BE THE PERFORMANCE
ENHANCING DRUG OF TENNIS, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. IT DOES SOUND LIKE IT IS
MORE WIDESPREAD THAN JUST A COUPLE OF BAD APPLES, ESPECIALLY
IF WE ARE ALL SITTING HERE WONDERING WHAT THE
MOTIVATION IS. THEN THERE CLEARLY ARE SOME ñ A BUNCH OF OTHER ISSUES THAT
ARE HAPPENING BEHIND CLOSED DOORS THAT WE ARE NOT PRIVY TO,
AND THAT MAKES ME THINK THAT IT IS A LOT MORE RAMPANT THAN IT
IS EVEN BEING SHOWN IT NOW.

  1. Irrelevant to the story, but Hannah needs to dye her hair back to normal- it looks nice, but she looks way too much like Ana with that shade of brown, in the wide shots they look like exactly the same person xP

  2. They aren't throwing the matches… people don't gamble on wins. They gamble on special conditions such as first set or for football amount of field goals or something like that.

  3. +swissbliss, serena? i doubt it. for $200,000? your conspiracy stinks. more than likely it is a player of lower rankings. probably from an eastern bloc country

  4. It's sport and money every sport is corrupt in one way or an other. And of course there take a bribe 200 grand is a lot of money even if you don't need money

  5. One possible reason why they're fixing matches for so little money is that maybe they don't have a choice. When match-fixing scandals happen, usually organized crime is involved. Sonny Liston is widely believed to have thrown his second fight against Muhammad Ali, not for money, but because he was under orders from the mob. Liston died just a few years later under suspicious circumstances. Tim Donaghy, the disgraced former NBA referee who served jail time for betting on games, wrote in his book that he tried to get out, but someone from the Gambino crime family threatened his wife and daughters if he wouldn't cooperate.

  6. this is such stupid coverage. Seriously, lets lather on the speculation and go thin on ANY facts. No one wants to hear about lame analysis about how you might possibly stumble to throw a match. Just all made up crap. Great work again baby channel

  7. OH NOT TENNIS
DONT LET THOSE RASCALS RUIN TENNIS
THE MOST ENTERTAINING SPORT ON THE PLANET
    RIGHT ABOVE GOLF
    HOLY SHIT
    CALL THE PRESIDENT

  8. Why are they throwing matches for such little money? Oh yeah $200,000 now think of it like horse racing where everything is bet on. That $200,000 can easily be bet on the person they are throwing to and then is now turned into a couple million for losing a match…

  9. So I thought about this. Wagering on a game is NOT part of the game itself, even though with everything being bet on it seems like it. If a player wants to throw a match, he or she SHOULD be able anything he/she wants to do. It will affect their ranking negatively and their pocket book positively. It is their choice. IF you choose to bet on a sport where you DO NOT play in the game, tough cookies for you. The bookies and the betting industry with their stats and locks ALREADY CHEAT the system and have fixed the BETTING part of the game for them. So the wagerer is really the fool. To risk money (most times that cannot be afforded) on a game that you have NO control over is foolish. "A fool and his money is soon separated".

  10. I don't know where they got this 50K figure but if there is something fishy in top games, it likely involves sums that are much greater. You get more than 50K to be a second round loser at a grand slam event and in Masters, you get 50K for being a round of 16 loser (3rd round). Why would a player accept 50K for losing a match if he can make the same amount of money by progressing one more round?

For lower tier tournaments, ATP 500 and 250, for which there is still tons of liquidity on betting markets, the sum of 50K sounds a bit more credible but just about.

  11. Now they need to investigate the NCAA, NBA and NFL there's major fixing games going on in professional and college sports in America

  12. It is simple why they do it. Low risk of getting proven guilty and even when you have earned millions a few hundred thousand is still nothing to sneeze at. Not to mention of you have say only made a million in your career and get offered 50k that is 5% of your total earnings and your not likely to get caught. I mean that is like someone giving you a really nice car right there on the spot.

  13. "And also the people who aren't sort of the top players like the Djokovics and Agassis"
Djokovic is the best tennis player in the world, and had one of the best seasons in SPORT last year and in 2011. Djokovic is also one of the highest paid athletes in the WORLD
Agassi hasn't been playing tennis for years, he retired, and he was a grand slam champion as well
Please guys, use facts, Djokovic and Agassi are not small time players, by any means

  14. If you have syndicates behind me it this is a great way to launder money… And who is to say the very rich and successful on sports weren't made so by the very mechanism we're talking about. If that is the case then the superstar is simply paying back the system of that provided for them.

  15. I believe a Tennis player's family member was kidnaped a few years ago in an attempt to get him or her (I cant remember) to throw a match. If the players are being approached in their hotel rooms by these mob type characters you have to think intimidation is a factor. "throw the match for a pittance and your protection fee"

  16. Say it ain't so, I love tennis.

That being said, the matches are worth hundreds of thousands, why would they throw it for such a low amount?

  17. I've always believed major sport leagues have been fixed there is to much money involved not to be fixed… Corporations don't gamble millions of dollars without any assurances…

  18. I bet you the UFC is going to have a big problem with this bc such a high percentage of the fighters are making shit money. Even a lot of the top 10 in their division arent making too much. It makes the sport pretty vulnerable to these type of gamblers

  19. Did Hannah just say that Djokovic and Agassi aren't top players. Yes Agassi no longer is because he retired 10 years ago. He made $30 million in prize money during his career. If you know tennis you know his legacy. And Djokovic is currently ranked number 1. Please do your research before you comment.

  20. TYT, the bribe may (or may not) be substantial. But, consider the potential windfall from actually "betting" on your own match(s). Hmmmm, tha options are endless. I don't gamble. But I know you can bet on ALL kinds of minor specifics in games/matches (i.e. 1st to score; set spread, errors, etc.). Who knows ?!

  21. Price fixing is growing more and more common with corporations, I would look at the sponsers in the cost benefit analysis Anna mentioned.

  22. All professional sports are fixed in some way or another. Not just in terms of betting but also putting forth entertaining story lines to draw in more viewers. Betting against the public is profitable for a reason.

  23. The players might be betting millions against themselves through someone else, this is what i find the most possible explanation, and the 50,000 is just a way to cover their asses and mitigate the offense in case they get caught.

  24. or maybe – these organizations have something "over" certain athletes like compromising pictures, or have info in their possession that the athletes can not risk going out public. we are talking about gambling folks gambling lots of money (so rather shady people similar to mob or mob activities)

  25. I stopped listening to that one chick soon she said "the Agassis". yeah what a name drop. probably knows nothing about tennis

  26. uhhh.. its simple. yeah the amounts are small.. but has anybody even considered the athletes are betting against themselves and making huge $$$. thats what i would do if i already decided i was throwing a match.

  27. Novac was approached pretty early on in his career according to his interview through his team and they apparently roundly rejected the offer out of hand!

  28. Or maybe that's why they are playing tennis in the first place… because of the easy money outside of tournaments.
(I'd be like, pay me in BitCoin or something similar)

  29. 50,000 and we will place a bet for you against you for 5 million. You are favored to win so your take will be $50,000 + $300,000. Is it worth it now?

  30. Here's the fix. If your a gambler don't bet on tennis cause its corrupt and the officials aren't interested in cleaning it up. If your an organization that takes bets on sports stop taking bets on tennis unless you enjoy being taken to the cleaners. Problem resolved.

  31. Maybe I watch too many movies, but why would they throw a match for a small amount? Ever hear of an offer they can't refuse? Bookies have long been tied to organized crime.

  32. In the US open for example, you would get $68K in the second round (best 32). If you know that the next match after that would be against Federer and you know you will loose, if you're ranked 30th that's what you would get $68K. BUT, you could take the 50K and use that money to bet against you and make $100K.

  33. Lose the match or your family.. Russian and italian syndicates dont really need to pay that much to get you to do something. I doubt the tennis integrity unit can protect you from them. I'd throw the match too.

  34. Lose the match or your family.. Russian and italian syndicates dont really need to pay that much to get you to do something. I doubt the tennis integrity unit can protect you from them. I'd throw the match too.

  35. It's tax free income and probably straight liquid cash. Very useful for many transactions and can't be traced as easily. That's the incentive.

  36. How about they threatened to break their legs or harm their families. Or the players themselves (or persons they designated) had bets on the match.

  37. i dunno why it matters, the only people this hurts are gamblers, and gamblers dont have the right to a fair bet, caveat emptor, no one would bet on a pro wrestling match because we know its fixed

  38. Bjorn Borg never won the us open. People threatened his life and he retired after the lose to John McEnroe at the us open final. Just some food for thought.

  39. Maybe, possibly, there is a chance, it could very well be…..What was the point of reporting this? You have no proof, it isn't an important topic to mainstream society and most of this piece was just your opinions. This is not journalism, its a waste of time.

  40. To be honest there is probably not a lot of it at the high level but players such as monfis and Nadal i could believe could be doing this.

  41. The top 25 would never risk taking any amount of money to "fix matches." The players in the top 25 make millions of dollars in endorsements. This could never affect them. It's absolute career suicide to engage in this kind of travesty.

  42. How limited can you be to believe a Top 20 ATP player would do this??? They earn milions every year only from Sponsors…..why do they need 50.000 pounds? Need a logic answer and not speculations. My opinios is those rumours are created for media and by somebody who doesnt know tennis in detail…..one more stupid video and stupid comments from Turks….

  43. No grand slam champion such as Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Wawrinka would engage in this. They make millions in endorsements anyways.

  44. 25mil???!!! They have no idea how much money you get in tennis. Its not like the nba or football. 200,000 is a lot for throwing a championship but not that much for throwing an early game.

  45. I don't know what the big deal is, I had my tennis racket fixed and so what? Everybody should fix stuff that need to be fixed. I fixed my cat. And he stayed fixed. Fix a meal — why not?!! Fixin' to have an orgasm? Go right ahead, podner.

These Turkish people. Always making trouble. You people out there who want to fix things, you go right ahead.

  46. you can find osama but you cant find match fixing, because its a global market and its not a game but a staged circus, all biggies are involved
