so one of the main ingredients to
being a pure ball striker and something that’s missing from the average golfers
game is shallowing the shaft on the way back down getting us into position to
then strike the back of the ball as you can see I have some sticks on the ground
I’ve got this little Callaway stick that goes on the end of my stick and I have a
alignment stick here the reason we have this is just to show you I like this one
because it can feel pretty natural as a swing but you can also put the shaft put
the alignment stick right next to the grip on the shaft here what we want to do is get ourselves set up normally would see we have a stick here and I’ve got a foot
width in between each stick and a stick up ahead of the ball a little bit both
pointing at my target so that means we’ve got one stick a little inside the
ball target line and one stick outside just like anything with golf it’s filled
with opposites so if we can get the club shaft feeling a little more vertical
it’s going to be easier for it to then shallow out as we come down let’s take a
look at that you can see this stick getting close what we’re going to do is
we’re going to rub it right down the lead thigh here as we go back and then
we’re going to take it right to this halfway point and point it right at that
stick okay let’s do that again one two is the second piece and you can see what
I did there I took the stick and pointed it from there to there but I did it in a
very specific way I took it back and I actually let the club go this way a
little bit okay and what we can see is as I’m letting it go a little bit back
and behind what’s happening this stick is getting a little bit closer to my
forearm but it’s also pointing in a direction that’s going to point a little
bit out and towards that stick in front of you okay so a little bit of this move
as we get ourselves set for number two let’s do that again we’ve got one
vertical two shallowing and then three let’s take a look at what that would
look like all in one motion again we’re just going to go one two three okay let’s go ahead and take a look at that
swing on track man welcome to Trackman let’s go ahead and
take a look at swing okay let’s back it back up here and take a look at it in
slower motion and see the differences as we go back I rub these stick at the butt
end of my club right down my leg and then move it where I get to this halfway
point so as I’ve turned my shoulders I’m actually pointing at this stick on the
ground okay and then what we’re going to do we’re go to go to the top that same
angle but now we’re going to change angles what we’re going to try to do is
move the stick at the end of the butt end of the club here where it’s going to
move closer to my forearm and also try to point out towards the stick on the
ground so let’s see how I did on the way down and as you can see I’ve done a
pretty good job I’ve moved to the stick close to my form which is in turn
shallowed the shaft back and behind me in other words get got the club head to
move a little bit below my hands and so when I get back to this halfway point
again where my arm is parallel again you can see I’ve completely changed the
angle that we started with and now we’re pointing out towards the stick on the
ground and that is shallowing once we do that we really set the wrist how we want
it to be and now we can just turn turn turn the club face will be in the right
position and we can hit the ball with our rotation of our body that allows us
to hit with some power every amateur I see doesn’t have any shallowing so when
they come down this face is still wide open they block it straight out to the
right and they tell themselves oh okay well that’s not going to work I better
pull myself up to flip the face over or fall backwards or come up with some kind
of solution to get to face to square and it what we’re going to do now is by
changing how we take it back and add shallowing which in turn changes the
orientation of my hands and the wrists and puts the club face in a position to be
able to come down into the ball with the rotation right body so it’s square we
can hit the ball really hard and still hit it straight so shallowing becomes
extremely valuable and a piece that is missing for most golf swings but not
from yours anymore if you continue to do this drill you’ll have shallowing and
you’ll start to feel how you can hit the ball with more and more power and more
and more control and improve your golf game

  5. Dear Maggs. Thanks for your Videos. I really like the Video you made about the Back Swing. The explanation with: Put your Shaft on Top of your Thumb. Great. Love it. That made my Back-Swing a No-Brainer. So simple.

    But my Downswing…. This video is very nice. But can you give me, and the Community, something like the Back-Swing and Over-The-Thumb-Thing for Downswing… The Point for me is I have to feel it without gerat thinking about what to do. With Stick down at the bottom and a feeling of shallow the Shaft a little bit makes it hard to feel it correct for me…

    Is there something like over-the-top-of-your-thumb for downswing? That what help a lot I think :-).

  8. Would the feeling be .. hands moving towards ball or covering ball ? That's how it feels to me ? Like I'm hitting so far right field however upper body still rotates & I finish left , I've been a flipper for years with shaft at impact very upright – so this feels very different…. however when I strike it well it does feel I'm hitting out to the right ?

  11. Now here's one item I don't think you mentioned. Your head drops lower because like many pros, you drop lower before impact. For some it is an increase in knee bend, for others their overall body drops…and then through impact it straightens… the left leg extends, pushing against the ground to produce more whip of the clubhead. Does this make sense?
    If you draw a line at the top of your head, it will prove this… your head lowers because your body lowers coming into impact… in fact most pros do this.

  13. Maggs, watching your Trackman in the second vid seems to show that you take the club to the inside not straight up as you did in the first intro of shallowing out the club. Do you see that also? Trying to follow you but difficult. Thanks

  14. Great illustration on the shallowing out concept. But in doing so I feel it's quite easy to get the hands spinning out in front without much vertical drop (from DTL). How do you prevent that from happening? Thanks!

  15. When he said, "set your wrists" the lightbulb went on! Get that right wrist flat at the top the right elbow goes in toward the ball and the club has to shallow. Link that into your kinetic chain and Power baby, power!

  16. Well obviously if you swing steep on the BS you must shallow the DS. Or you could use a same plane swing both up and down and get rid of steep and shallow and just stay on plane throughout. Lots of choices with the golf swing.

  17. Yea, but it should shallow out naturally without thinking or doing anything; the golf swing naturally will allow for opposite momentum if you stay relaxed and let the arms fall with gravity.

Please do NOT waste your time on this…it is extremely dangerous because it means the clubhead is further away from the ball- target line and this means the wrists have to 'flick' to get the clubhead to catch up. Study Sergio Garcia's swing in the early years…when he won almost nothing. Pleanty of this rubbish and it wasn't until he 'stopped the drop' that he was able to find more fairways. This is just a marketing 'fluff' like Stack and Tilt was/is.

  20. The real problem is that people believe they need to swing the club across the pelvis which is completely wrong. Good ball strikers swing the club FROM BEHIND THE BACK AND THEN OFF THE SIDE OF THE BODY. Not across the pelvis. Watch any great golfer or baseball player in slow mo and you'll see the mass of the club stays behind the plane of their chest/shoulders until the very last second then it cantilevers out to their right side striking the ball. People who have this steepening or over the top swing get the mass of the club in front of their torso way too early then have to force their arms down and across the pelvis in order to hit the ball, resulting in a very physically laborious weak, high fade. If you swing a tennis ball on a rope you'll understand how swinging with the mass behind you works. Simply, shallowing the club in a conscious effort may work for 1% but if they understand why they need to do it and they physics behind it, it'll actually happen on it's own.

  21. Having played golf for over 40 years, it is indeed a good walk spoiled. The more you know, the worse off you are if U aren't a pro with a coach and somebody that is a teacher that knows your swing. I know tons of pro teachers and each one has always evaluated what they think I am doing wrong when I lose my swing, and I promise you U will lose your swing, and if you make the wrong adjustment, u go down a terrible slope. I have been told and seen a million variations of this. But by simply putting that stupid stick in front of the ball, relaxed me to make the change smoothly, instead of forcing it. GREAT VIDEO U have no idea how U stopped me from working on stuff that wasn't a freakin issue.

  22. Maggs, I love pros like you that show the various positions / directions of the butt of the club. Without this knowledge I had felt pretty much clueless. Can you talk about specific locations in relationship to the butt of the club and the various results when the wrists uncock ie. at the ball, slightly behind the ball or in front of the ball.

  23. In this demonstration, his hands are moving towards the ball in the transition which you don't do in any other sport. Your hands come from the inside and the club goes out in front of you, not behind you. this is more shallowing marketing cliche fluff. It may work if someone is overly steep, but making this compensation probably won't work for very long.

  24. This shallow crap is like the golf teachers current trend. Such crap. A good transition makes the club look like its doing this. Don't TRY and do it, or you will fail…

  26. This seems misleading because, yes, for a split second the butt end does point outside the ball on the downswing, but actually the butt end goes right back in line with the ball at impact, so the downswing is more of a "dropping" down.

  27. Great. When you take it to the top and then start to come down I get lost a little bit. Great illustration though. Is it possible to play golf with just taking it half way like you do in the first part?
