Only 96 high school TENNIS players in the state of Ohio qualify for the BOYS State Tournament each year… THIS season, FIVE of those… are from Ursuline alone. That ties them with Gahanna Academy… for the MOST in the state… The Irish will send TWO doubles teams… consisting of seniors Austin Arfaras and Luke Tsudis… as well as sophomore standouts Josh Khavari and Gavin Blacksher… This will also be the SECOND straight trip to Mason for Ursuline junior Greg Morgione in the SINGLES tournament. AUSTIN ARFAS: NO, HONESTLY IT’S AMAZING HOW WE ALL JUST WANT TO PUCH EACH OTHER. WE’RE ALL COMPETITVE. WE ALL WANT TO WIN, AND I THINK THTA’S WHAT DRIVES US TO BE BETTER AND CLEARLY IT SHOWS. LUKE TSUDIS: THIS TEAM IS A FAMILY AND WE ALL WORK TOGETHER EVEN THOUGH THIS IS AN INDIVIDUALIZED SPORT. GAVIN BLACKSHER: IT’S WEIRD YOU KNOW. I DON’T THINK IT’S REALLY SUNK IN FULLY. I’M STILL KIND OF RIDING THE HIGH, HAVING COME BACK DOWN TO EARTH, SO ITS FUN IT’S DIFFERNT IT’S COOL AND JUST TRYING TO ENJOY IT WHILE I STILL CAN KENT BLACKSHER:AND SINKING IT? NOT JUST YET. I THINK IT WILL WE=HEN WE GET DOWN TO MASON AND SEE THAT BIG STADIUM AND SEE OUR FIVE KIDS THERE. I THINK THAT GOING TO BE A NEAT MOMENT FOR EVERYONE.” The Irish FIVE aren’t the ONLY local kids competing this weekend either… Anthony and Alexander Payiavlas from Warren Harding have qualified for the Division One DOUBLES tournament… and Warren JFK junior… Armand Nannicola will compete in the D-2 SINGLES tournament for the 2nd straight season… It all takes place in Mason, Ohio… just outside of Cincinnati… The tournament starts on Friday.
