Recognizing short balls! So the old
saying ‘height equals depth’. So we’ll tell players to get the ball of deep, aim high
over the net. So that’s always a good tell, if ball is coming towards you and
it’s high over the net it’s probably going to be landing deep, if it’s low
over the net it’s probably landing short. There’s another tell you can look for,
if you look at the trajectory of the ball off your opponent’s strings,
let me show you from the side first. The ball goes more horizontally
off the strings, gravity is going to act in the ball and it’s most likely going
to land short. If the ball Rises off the strings it’s probably going to be high
over the net it’s probably going to be a deeper shot. So if you look from the
front the ball is coming like this towards you, there’s a good chance it’s going to
land short and once again if it’s rising off the strings it’s probably to be high
over the net and probably going to be a deep ball. So what you want to look for
is those two tails just try to recognize the short ball early so then you can
move into the court so you can take advantage of the short ball opportunity! Here’s a rally situation to help you recognize and anticipate the short ball. So remember height equals depth so you want to look at the height of the ball
above the net in relation to the depth of the bounce. Now the other thing we
pointed out was the trajectory of their strings. So if the ball is at a similar
height when it crosses the net as the contact point then that’s hit more on a
horizontal trajectory. If the ball is above the net and it’s higher than
the contact point then that ball is hit on an upward trajectory and most often or
not that ball is going to land deep! But let’s take a look at a couple of
examples paying attention to the height of the contact point, the height of the
ball above the net and the depth of the shot! So here we’ve got the contact point,
you can see the balls going on more of a straight line, it’s the similar height
above the net and the ball ends up landing short! I have got the contact point, the ball is high over the net upper
trajectory and the ball lands deep Here’s another contact point. You’ll see
it to the similar height above the net and the ball ends up landing short so
that’s more of a horizontal trajectory off the strings again similar
height above the net and the balls landing short! Right here’s a contact
point, the ball is much higher above the net and look at the depth of the shot! Here’s contact, the ball is higher than the contact point and look at the depth of
the shot. Here you have contact, see how high the ball is above the net, up
trajectory and the ball ends up landing deep so it’s also important to recognize
that when the ball is a lot higher over the net the ball landed deep and when
was low over the net it ended up landing short so maybe good idea to watch this
video over again which you want to look for those things when you are playing to
help you to anticipate the short ball early so you can move into the court and
take time away from your opponent!
