OF U.S. CHILDREN EXPERIENCED A CONCUSSION OR TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AND LEAVE CHILDREN AT HIGH RISK OF LONG TERM HEALTH PROBLEMS. WE’RE COMMITTED TO SHOWING YOU WHY MENTORING MATTERS. IN TODAY’S EDITION, A SOUTH FLORIDA HIGH SCHOOLTEACHER AND COACH WAS AWARDED FOR A PRESTIGIOUS AWARD. HE WAS NAMED THE TOP HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS COACH IN THE COUNTRY. HE TOUCHED THE LIVES OF HUNDREDS OF SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTSED IN THE CLASSROOM. CBS 4 ELLIOT RODRIGUES HAS HIS STORY. GO UP AFTER THE BALL. UP, UP. THAT’S NICE. TODD REUBEN STEIN HAS BEEN THE HEAD TENNIS COACH FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS AT HIS HIGH SCHOOL. A FORMER COLLEGE PLAYER, HE LED THE SHARKS TO TWO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND JUST NAMED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL COACH OF THE YEAR BY THE UNITED STATES PROFESSIONAL TENNIS ASSOCIATION RECEIVING THE AWARD. ON THE KOWRLT HE MENTORED SOME OF THE TOP — COURT, HE MENTORED SOME OF OF THE TOP TALENTED PLAYERS . AS A MENTOR, I REALLY LOOK UP TO HIM IN THAT WAY. BUT I TREAT HIM AS A FRIEND. HE CONNECTS AS A PLAYER AND NOT JUST ME, EVERYONE ON THE TEAM. WE’LL DO ACTIVE READING. HE’S NOT CONNECTING WITH TENNIS PLAYERS. HE’S IN THE CLASSROOM AND HE’S WITH A DIFFERENT GROUP OF STUDENTS. TO BE PERFECTLY HONEST, I CAN’T SEE MYSELF TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM WITH ANY OTHER GROUP OF KIDS. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE GUYS. OFTEN REUBEN STEIN’S SPECIAL ED STUDENTS ARE NONVERBAL AND FACE A MULTITUDE OF CHALLENGES. HE’S AN AWESOME TEACHER. I LIKE HIM BEING OUR TEACHER AND OUR FRIEND. HE’S ALWAYS THERE FOR US. ONE QUESTION YOU MIGHT HAVE — REUBEN STEIN FOUND HE CAN MAKE AS BIG A DIFFERENCE WITH THE SPECIAL EDUCATION KIDS AS HE CAN WITH THE STARS OF THE TENNIS COURT. HE’S THE GREATEST AND HE DEFINITELY DESERVES THE COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD. WHEN YOU HEAR IT EVERYWHERE FROM EVERYBODY THAT HAD SUCCESS AT SOME LEVEL. IF YOU WANT SOMETHING BAD ENOUGH, YOU CAN GET IT. I TRY TO EMPLOY THAT ON MY STUDENTS. FORWARD. KEEP MOVING AGAIN. FORWARD. GOOD JOB. FORWARD. THAT’S THE WAY, HONEY. AND COACH REUBEN STEIN’S MANTRA IS PASSION, INTENSITY, AND DESIRE CREATE A WINNING ATTITUDE ON AND OFF THE COURT.
