Its a dream final in the 6 with hometown favorite
Bianca Andreescu going up against the legendary Serena Williams for that Rogers Cup trophy. I’ll preview this highly anticipated matchup
to get you ready and I’ll give my prediction of who I think will take home the title, here
on GS Tennis News Today. To reach the finals Serena got by Elise Mertens
and Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets before playing her best match thus far against
World Number 2 Naomi Osaka winning that one 3 & 4. In the Semifinal it took Serena a bit to warm
up as she dropped her first set of the tournament before coming back to upend Marie Bouzkova
16 63 63. For Bibi to make the final round she had to
first get by unseeded tests Genie Bouchard and Daria Kasatkina in 3. She then recorded her 5th and 6th top 10 wins
of the year taking out Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova respectively. In the semifinal she finally had a straight
set victory taking out fellow young gun Sonya Kenin 64 76. To be successful against Serena she needs
to make sure that she’s the one dictating play and in control of the rallies. Bianca is an aggressive player and plays her
best when in control, rather than on the run. Dictating play is also important because Naomi
Osaka struggled because of this exact same reason. In that quarterfinal match Naomi unlike in
the 2018 US Open was respondent of what Williams did rather than making her respond and making
her move. Getting Serena off balance prevents her from
hitting those hard, penetrating strokes so Bianca needs to make sure she does this too. Another thing Bianca needs to do is not let
up. In most of her matches, Bibi started very
well taking the first set without too much trouble, then faltered in the second before
recovering in the third. Serena being such an excellent frontrunner
will make it a lot more difficult to come right back into the match as well. Doing this is also important because Bibi’s
body is significantly worn down after this week and needs to keep things short. This is her first full tournament since Miami
and has taken multiple medical timeouts this week so closing things out if the opportunity
presents itself is very important. Lastly, Bianca needs to make sure she has
a good serving day. Not only does this make life easier for her,
but it prevents Serena from often attacking that second serve. For Serena to claim her first title since
2017, she needs to also have a good serving day. A common theme in all 3 of her past finals
is poor serving. Her first serve percentage was significantly
low in those matches which is a big contributor to why she had such a tough time holding serve. Her serve this week has been her saving grace
getting her out of tough spots and putting her over the finish line, so that must be
on in this upcoming match. I also feel that Serena needs to keep herself
inside the baseline because in all of her matches it indicated controlled, aggressive
play that was highly successful. Whenever Serena has the confidence to move
forward and come to the net it is generally a sign of good play. Now for the next point Im surprised I’m
even saying this because of how poorly she’s hit this shot in the past but Serena should
incorporate the drop shot into her strategy. Not only was this a successful shot in her
semifinal victory over Bouzkova, but its a good tool to use to test the legs of the 19
year old as she’s had to play over 10 hours of tennis this week. The final point for Serena is just for her
to have fun. In addition to her serving woes, tension and
pressure has prevented Serena from performing to her capabilities in her recent finals. Having the mindset of “ok this isn’t a
grand slam, there’s no real history on the line just have some fun” can be helpful
for her in the stressful moments of the match. To close out my match preview I believe Serena
Williams will defeat Bianca Andreescu in 3 sets to win the 2019 Rogers Cup. Bianca will have the crowd on her side and
has shown nerves of steel this year which is why I believe she’ll at least win a set. However, I pick Serena to win because I feel
as though these nerves of steel may combust when the going gets tough and the pressure
amounts. Though at 19 she is mentally beyond her years
even she isn’t immune to the pressure as even in her semifinal versus Kening it took
her 5 match points to finally close it out. Just imagine trying to close out an even bigger
match: the biggest one of her career. I also think Serena will be successful because
she has less mileage. As I mentioned before Bianca has ben playing
a lot of tennis and I think everything will catch up to her eventually. Do you agree with my prediction that Serena
will win, or do you believe the 19 year old will be able to win the biggest mach of her
life thus far. Leave your thoughts in the comment section

  1. Bianca is probably already 1 of the mentally strongest players out there. and she converted the only match point while she was serving. all the other ones were on kenin's serve. wont say anything about a tennis player blowing 10 match points on their opponents serve if the never had a double or triple break point but just 1 at a time. for the record 1 MTO not multiple MTO. really who has serena beaten in this tournament. Osaka is the only name but she has fallen of a cliff in term of her play lately. Bianca has beaten the 3 and 5 ranked players in the world. not to mention kenin who just beat serena a month ago. Bianca should win easy but if she has too will win even if it's hard.

  2. I love how they both play, but what I’ve been seeing, I think Serena is stringer and playing better. Bianca is not 100% healthy, so it will give Serena another edge over her.

  3. I think serena will win, bianca doesn't have the ground game like Osaka or that Russia girl, I don't see serena losing to her, she cant over power serena
