Hey everyone, Derrick here with a quick news update on the Switch, the copy of Golf that’s installed in every last system of the Switch, and its connection to Iwata. So, first of all, one of the things we haven’t covered yet is how modders have found an emulator within the Nintendo Switch, and a copy of the NES game Golf installed on it. So, what this means is that every single Switch system has this emulator in it, and that’s kind of a big deal on its own. And the game even packs in instructions specific for the Joy-Con controllers, at least according to the images that they’ve shown. Now, the modder SwitchBrew is the one that found Golf disguised by the final name “Flog”, or “Golf” backwards. This washed out of a dump of title names from the Nintendo Switch’s file system back in July, and according to GitHub poster yellows8 the game is on every copy of the Switch OS going back to system 1.0. However, they don’t exactly know what triggers the launching of this title, assuming it can be launched at all. Well, there might be an explanation for that. It could be unlocked sometime in the future, that’s still very possible, But the discovery of this game on the Switch and every single copy of the Switch has greater meaning, and that’s thanks to Justin Epperson that we kind of realized this. Now, Justin Epperson is a senior associate producer at 8-4, a translation studio that recently worked on Fire Emblem Echoes. And in a series of tweets he says: “Golf is imbedded in the Switch firmware and the JP Internet is calling it an ‘omamori’ or charm from Iwata (he coded the game himself).” “In Japanese culture omamori are bought at shrines for various reasons, if you keep one close to you it will protect you or give luck.” “So the idea is Nintendo imbedded Iwata’s game to watch over every unit and…” That’s… amazing. It just goes to show how much everybody at Nintendo truly loves Satoru Iwata and what he meant to that company. And, even now, just reporting on this, and talking about why this game is in there, why that matters, is honestly kind of making me tear up. He mattered that much, and the idea that Iwata himself is protecting the Switch and giving luck to it, and seeing it succeed in such a major way has to mean so much to them, and that it is a wonderful, wonderful feeling that they’re evoking here. I really hope that this is the case, because it is such a beautiful way to tribute this man, and what he did for Nintendo as a whole. So, yeah, it’s a strange thing when you start out as just matter-of-fact “Hey, here’s this weird thing that’s kind of in every Switch, what could this mean?” And then you see the meaning and it hits you like a punch to the gut? So again, we miss you, Iwata. You’re an inspiration even to this day and utmost respect for Nintendo if this indeed was the reasoning behind it. It makes a lot of sense, and even if it isn’t, It works so well. So thank you guys for watching, and of course be sure to subscribe to GameXplain for more on Nintendo and other things gaming as well. Thank you guys so much. Bye.

  1. This is so touching! I love that Nintendo would do something like this! What other company would do something like this?! Although it can be hard being a Nintendo fan at times, I'm glad to be a Nintendo fan because of little but big things like this!
    Thank you Nintendo!

  2. What if one day, Nintendo adds in a new code in a system update that adds Mother 3 as a hidden game that can only be accessed on Iwata's birthday… That would be both an amazing surprise and a true tribute to this legendary game developer, president, and gamer…

  3. Maybe there’s a button combination you have to find out like with the New 3DS where you tap the super Mario theme song in the internet browser and you get a mini game 😀

  4. Holy shit I'm crying, I'm literally crying right now. I miss Iwata and everything he's done for the company. Thank you so much :'(

  5. This is Nintendo's 'omamori' to Satoru Iwata. And it's a combination of yaku-yoke(avoidance of evil), kaiun(open luck, better fortune), shōbai-hanjō(prosperity in business-success in business and matters of money) and kanai-anzen(safety of one's family, peace and prosperity in the household).

  6. Wow… I really thought this was just some dumb thing being held behind a pay wall… but damn nintendo, you really are one of the sweetest companies out there. I doubt a single other big console developer out there has ever done anything like this.

  7. 私の子供時代に大変なことをして、偉大なゲームをして、笑顔を私の顔に込めてくれてありがとう、岩田さん。あなたがいなくなると寂しくなります。安らかに休みなさい。

    Translation: Thank you, Mr. Iwata, for doing a great deal to my childhood, making great games, putting a smile on my face. You will be missed. Rest at peace.

  8. You can activate Golf by having the Switch’s date set to July 11 (the day Iwata passed in 2015) of any year and doing the Nintendo Direct hand signal with the JoyCons. RIP Iwata.

  9. They actually reverse-engineered the way to launch the emulator and play Golf. http://switchbrew.org/index.php?title=Flog#Official_Launch

  10. And that's why Microsoft and Sony will never match Nintendo. No matter how many graphics or money you throw at a console you can't buy heart.

  11. Im not gonna cry….. im not gonna cry…. dont cry, dont cry, dont cry….. IWATA!!!!!!!!! PLEASE WATCH OVER NINTENDO!!!!!!! sob, sob, sob

  12. Awesome video GamexPlain. That is so amazing a really touching and a fantastic Tribute by Nintendo for Iwata-san much love 💕 missed but never forgotten.

  13. It's too bad that Iwata was President of NOJ presiding over their worst system releases though. Haven't been thoroughly impressed since the N64.

  14. Nintendo – embeds a random ass nes game into the switch Uhhh, this represents Iwatas death

    Nintendo Freaks: OMG I LOVE JAPAN AND ITS CULTURE KAWAII NUZZLES :3 rip iwata

  15. I FOUND ANOTHER WAY TO GET TO GOLF! You go to the EShop and go to enter code. That code at the bottom of the switch, type that in and then type either NS or NX after it!

  16. according to the Mario wiki, you can activate it by holding a joycon in both hands, making his "directly to you" gesture on july 11th, then you hear a recording from a 2012 Japanese Nintendo presentation featuring iwata and the game boots up, sadly they removed "FLOG" in 4.0 update, but it's still pretty cool! just wish I could have tried it out for myself…

  17. satoru iwata was a truly legend of Nintendo that help everyone at Nintendo at every problem no matter how hard it is he will everything make impossible possible

  18. When your on Nintendo Switch so your family freindly :
    •[name] go and just flog off
    • go flog yourself
    • oh flog
    • snip.. erclips
    • you talk aloud of snip.. erclips
    • that came out your dock
    • oh your mom’s a stylus
    • where’s your dad

    Flog = F*ck
    snip = sh!t
    dock = a$$
    Stylus = $lag
    Dad = gone

    Or just don’t swear

  19. Before the version 4.0.0, setting the date to July 11th and making the "directly to you" gesture Iwata did in directs using the joy-cons, would open the game
