Hi my name is Lincoln Ward, I’m a USPTA certified
teaching pro here in Austin Texas with Lone Star Tennis company. Today James Men and I
are going to demonstrate for you how to hit a lob in tennis. A lob is generally when you
hit a ball that goes pretty high and then bounces back in the court on the other side
of the net. You use the lob when your opponents are coming into the net putting a lot of pressure
on you. You can do one of two things. Try to drive the ball past them which has a lower
percentage and less accuracy or you could stand back open up your strings and send the
ball up in the air over their heads to send them back to the baseline. When you hit your
overhead the first thing you want to do is take your racket back as if you are hitting
a normal ground stroke but instead of turning your strings to look down at the ground. You
want to open them up to the sky. When you go, when the ball bounces on your side you
are going to step forward like you would in any other ground stroke, bring your racket
head down underneath the ball, come up from beneath the ball make contact and angle sending
the ball up in the air, when you follow through it’s going to be the same as any other ground
stroke except you are not going to pronate your wrist as you would in any other ground
stroke. Keep your wrist firm, strings open to the sky an d lift the ball up and out.
You might want to try two or three times to get the depth and the height to where you
want it to be. Practice makes perfect. That’s how you hit a lob in tennis. I’m Lincoln Ward
thank you very much.
