Hey guys this is Gaston from Connecting Tennis. How are you again? First of all I want to thank again always all the time
for the support all the views in the videos, the sharing and the comments I
actually love how you guys are interacting with all that. There were
a lot of comments to people saying that I look like Djokovic and that my forehand
in the video of the forehand looked like Djokovic, well thanks for that, I take the compliment I wish I had Novak Djokovic’s forehand but okay if
you guys think it looks like it alright I’ll take it
today what we’re going to be doing is actually two-handed backhand. I’m
going to explain you, show you the things that you need to have in mind
when you’re trying to learn a two-handed backhand The way I like to teach it is the easiest way to then be able to control your hands here right hand if you’re a righty
like I am continental grip remember as I showed in the video of the serve with slice, you see my finger I don’t have my racquet here I have it there in the edge
you have a free wrist over here the second hand, the left hand, you open here
you meet the racquet in the middle and you close. This is going to allow you to get balls in all the heights, from low balls, high balls, the ones in the high of the hips. So with this grip and having this in mind remember when we
talked about the forehand we’re talking the first thing you do is this rotation
over here with the backhand it’s exactly the same okay I said that you guys have
to take here like we were grabbing from behind so here’s the same when the ball is coming to you the grip here, the first
thing you do is turning 45 degrees okay and try to reach something
behind you see that I’m not turning my legs like this or either my hips, I’m turning
shoulders. Somebody that I loved who does this is Murray I think is
probably one of the best players that shows this, a lot of videos of him
training in slow motion where the first thing he does is the split step and the
rotation of the shoulders. So let’s go step by step. We have the grip, when the
ball is coming you’re going to start then your shoulders turn 45 degrees the
right leg okay and you’re going to put the other leg in front, now very
important here I see a lot of people making the common take when they put the leg in front they put it like this What’s the problem here? when you put
your leg like this, perpendicular to the base line when you try to rotate this
is stopping me, you can go over it so very important guys, a little detail is going to make a difference when you put the leg put in
45 degrees, it will allow you to open your hips all the way, hit the ball in
front and rotate over it. If you have it like this, it’s going to be very hard
and you’re going to end up falling. So again from here you turn this leg put
this one in front, you see that as I’m turning and putting my shoulder in, this
is going to show me my chin with my shoulder and the racquet behind.
Some people like take it all the way up here some people go straight down
which I don’t like because you lose the timing in the point of impact so
with the ball from here turning, racquet back okay as you start to come up you
start to put the weight in the right leg, start to drop the
racquet rotating with the hips here the ball has to hit in front of you, right in front of your leg, arm extended, push all the way forward
and then I start to close with the arm and when you start to close
is when you fall and yo do the finish. I don’t want to have you guys listening ten minutes on all the techniques so I’m going to put two or three balls in slow motion showing all this movement again here like 45 bringing the racquet up, putting the
weight of the of the body in the right leg taking the racquet, dropping and hitting in front of you and finishing all the way and then I’m gonna put again the real
drill I will be doing and showing you guys on a couple balls not
slow motion, in normal speed so you guys can see how I hit the ball, how I
fall, how I recover to the middle, how I prepare again put the legs and recover to the middle. Let’s see how it looks There you could see how I hit the ball and I did it when I fall I marked and I exaggerated this falling. It’s very
important guys especially when you’re running more than two or three
steps. If you run and you hit the ball like this, then think on all the steps that you have to
do to recover the court so very important that marked here falling and
this is going to make you ready for next ball to go to the other side, to run forward, so I marked that falling. I remember when I was learning it when I was 13 or
14 my coach used to get crazy because I was lazy and I never did this falling
and I was trying to hit there with the hands and coming back, so please with the time I understood that I don’t want you guys to make the same mistake okay!? Hitting, falling..the footwork is the key I know if you have a good hand you are going to trust in your hands to play, but the footwork is a key. So, hitting, falling.. now I’m going to show you couple balls
in a slow motion where you guys can see every single detail. My footwork, taking the racquet back, hitting in front okay you’re going to see the racquet all
the way there in front finishing and falling Alright guys so there you could see in
fast motion in slow motion all the details the footwork taking the racquet back, putting the shoulder in everything so let’s practice it,
whenever you have the racquet before going to the court you can practice this
rotation here you can practice also the power okay in your shots with a medicine
ball, doing the same motion, grabbing the ball rotating, throwing it and
finishing. That’s going to give you good strength in the hips okay it’s
going to help you with the footwork and those are very very good exercises that
are going to give you the balance that you need remember with all the core and

  2. Excellent demonstration. Nice explanation of the grip, and good emphasis on the importance of not locking the hip by taking the forward step to the ball with the foot turned sideways instead of 45 degrees. Well done.

    Could you kindly explain on how to initiate the racket drop? I believe the racket forward movement and drop are one seamless motion and not two separate parts? None of the instructional videos i've seen on YT, seem to explain that.
    Do you get the racket to drop, by pulling with the bottom hand?

Thank you for video..one quick question..on the two handed backhand you are at least in part going across your body..sort of diagonal swing…for me this tends to impart sidespin with topspin.and I am so much better hitting backhand crosscourt…When Im hitting and want to hit straight or even up the line…it is so difficult to get true topspin and directional control while my forehand I can comfortably hit most places on court…similar to topspin vs kick serve…can you impart legit straight topspin with two handed backhand? Thanks again
