The GVSU women’s tennis team kept their
winning ways going this weekend with a sweep of SVSU on Saturday followed by a
big win over Northwood on Sunday to claim their 6th GLIAC title the wind put
the Lakers at 8 and 1 on the season with the GLIAC tournament next on the
calendar on Saturday the Lakers claimed the important point in doubles after
they won all three matches the duo of Veera Griva and Marilee Canellopoulos won
6 to 2 from the number one position followed by another win from Madison
Ballard and Nicole heininger as their pair won 6 to 3 from the number two slot
and secured the doubles point for the Lakers the Lakers continued their strong
play as they also swept the Cardinals in singles action playing out of the
number-one singles position was Griva’s who won while valid also claimed a point
for GVSU after she won from the number two slot Leko played from the number
three position and won before the first set and was a dominant performance in
the second set where she won 6 to 0 on Sunday the Lakers claimed the important
point in doubles that gave them the early lead after they won two of the
three matches the duo of Griva and Kenna low post fell from the number
one position but Christman and Leko were able to win from the number three
position the Lakers earned the first point of the match after Ballard and Heiniger were awarded a win from the number two doubles as their opponents had to
retire due to injury GVSU continued its strong play in two singles as they won
five of the six matches Griva who has been perfect this season against GLIAC
foes improved to nine and oh this season after she won from the number one
position while Ballard who has split time with greeba between the number one
and number two singles fell in a tough decision from that number two slot Leko
and Canellopoulos opposed both won in three sets from the number three in four
positions Grand Valley State will now prep for the 2018 GLIAC Women’s Tennis
Tournament which takes place next weekend at the Greater Midland Tennis
Center in Midland Michigan the Lakers will play as the number one seed in
faced number eight ashland on friday with first serve starting at 6:45 p.m.
