up for auction… It’s currently on display
at Sotheby’s in New York. At 1,109 carats, It was unearthed by the Canadian-based firm Lucara Diamond Corp in Botswana last November and has been named Lesedi la Rona, which means,
‘Our Light. The diamond was found in an arid and sparsely-populated
Southern African nation that relies heavily on diamond mining. “Seeing something like this is just phenomenal.
It’s difficult to imagine, isn’t it? It’s the largest rough diamond discovered in the
last 100 years” It really just soared off the scale of rare into something just, one
off, it’s just unique.” It diamond measures 65 millimeters by 56 mm
by 40 mm. Sotheby’s expects the diamond to fetch more than $70 million (USD). The biggest gem-quality diamond ever found
is the Cullinan diamond, a 3,106-carat stone found in the Premier mine in South Africa
in 1905. It was cut into several polished gems, the
two largest of which are part of Britain’s crown jewels. Despite the massive find, exports of diamonds
mined in Botswana fell 38 percent to $2.4 billion last year from $3.9 billion in 2014,
the lowest shipment of gems in six years.
