many times we find ourselves stuck playing defense rather than offense, especially
when things start to heat up. So this week we’re going to hear from top 5.0
player, Scott Moore, and get his insight on how to turn the tables by slowing
down the ball. »SCOTT: Hi! I’m Scott Moore. We’re here at the Cheyenne Mountain
Resort in Colorado Spring, CO. Today I’m going to talk about
taking the pace off of a ball when you find yourself
in a defensive position. ♪♪ lively music ♪♪
When you find yourself in a defensive position, this is a great technique
to help you reset the point and get back to a neutral position
where you have a reasonably good chance of winning the point.
♪♪ lively music ♪♪ ♪♪ lively music ♪♪ The way you do that is make
sure your center of gravity is low. Beat the ball to the spot.
Hold your paddle fairly firm, but don’t move it much so that
you can effectively bunt it back to your opponent’s feet. ♪♪ lively music ♪♪ ♪♪ lively music ♪♪ ♪♪ lively music ♪♪ I have a drill that I use to help
me practice this skill and develop it. Essentially, my partner gets at
the kitchen line and blasts balls at me which I try to absorb the power off of
and drop back at his feet, much like I’m bunting it. So we do that for about 5 minutes
or 10 minutes each, switch sides. And then I’ll move back to the middle
of No Man’s Land and do it again from the middle of No Man’s Land as if
I’m stuck there trying to work my way into a neutral position from the
middle of the court. ♪♪ lively music ♪♪ ♪♪ lively music ♪♪ I find those drills
extremely helpful. ♪♪ lively music ♪♪ So work on those drills, keep practicing taking
pace off the ball. It’s a great way to reset the point when you find yourself in

  1. Seems like when I have been successful at this, my paddle and elbow is tucked to my body, almost parallel to the net, rather then reaching out to take the ball closer to the net. Maybe my paddle is firmer(?) and prevents of feeling I have to pop the ball.

  3. I like to do this, and usually have decent success with it. I own a polymer core paddle. which, it seems to me, absorbs more of the momentum and makes shots like this easier, lessens the tendency to hit long, and gives me more control, but makes it almost impossible for me to hit a really hard smash. Am I imagining all this, or is this a recognized feature of the polymer core?

  4. Aloha! This is great instruction. Thanks so much. What I especially like is what you say about hitting this at opponent's feet… so many folks I play with will bunt back a fast ball, but not at their opponent's feet. More like like a pop-stop with the ball setting up nicely for the opponent to blast it back!! I realize it's also a skill set level determined by experience but, nevertheless, it can be frustrating. At the feet is a crucial part of this skill. Thanks again!
