The draw with possibly the most popcorn matches
on the mens side this entire year is out, as the Cincinnati Open is set to kick off
next week. I’ll break down this Big 4 filled draw,
and give my prediction of who I think will win here on GS Tennis News Today Reigning Wimbledon Champion and World Number
One Novak Djokovic will begin his Cincy title defense against either Pierre Hughes Herbert
or Sam Querrey. In the next round he’s projected to face
John Isner and in the Quarters he could meet Karen Khachanov, Nick Kyrgios, or Fabio Fognini. A Wimby final rematch is on the cards as Federer
is his his projected semifinal opponent, and in the finals Rafael Nadal. Novak’s section is filled with big servers
like Querrey, Isner, and Kyrgios which could possibly cause him trouble if the Serb isn’t
on point with his own serve. The bottom half of this mini section is loaded
with talent, but the name I’m mainly fixated on is that of Nick Kyrgios. It won’t be an easy road for the Aussie
to get that match with Djokovic as he has to get by Karen Khachanov in the second round
as possibly Fabio Fognini in the fourth. I expect Djokovic to get through this section
due to him being Djokovic and also to the fact that 8th seeded Khachanov may be too
tired from his deep Rogers Cup run to pose a dangerous threat. Roger Federer look to shake off his rough
Wimbledon final loss opening up against either Matteo Berretini, or Juan Ignacio Londero. He may face close friend and compatriot Stanislas
Wawrinka in the next round but the always dangerous Nikolaz Basilashvili looms as well. In the Quarters Roger may face youngers Daniil
Medvedev or Stefanos Tsitsipas. In the final two round he is set to face Novak
Djokovic and Rafael Nadal respectively. This section on paper looks particularly rough
for Roger but i see him making through. I feel that Stan will be his opponent in the
third round, but due to lack of confidence the 20-time Major Champion will get through. Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tstisipas are
on a collision course to meet in the round of 16, and if this matchup happens I see Stef
getting his first win over Daniil, due to the Russian possibly being fatigued after
two consecutive deep runs in Washington and Montreal. I believe Stef’s run will end in the Quarters
to Fed though because even throug he did win their matchup in Dubai, i still believe the
revenge is not done for Roger. Dominic Thiem will start his campaign for
his 2nd Masters 1000 title against either Richard Gasquet or Andy Murray. After that a rematch from Montreal is on the
table as Marin Cilic could be his round of 16 opponent. Alexander Zverev or Roberto Bautista Agut
are his likely Quarterfinal opponents and Nadal and Nishikori are his semifinal ones. Lastly, in the final he may face Roger Federer
or Novak Djokovic. Thiem’s section is one I feel of opportunity. Except for Marin, None of these players did
particularly well here last year and this is a chance for them to get some points and
build their rankings. Zverev’s mini section is full of young talents
such as Felix, Frances, and Hubert and I think one of these young guns will make the quarterfinal. Dominic has a tough opener irregardless of
the opponent as Gasquet os a very solid opponent, plus you can’t count a champion like Andy
Murray out. I do think he’ll make the third round before
falling to Marin Cilic. I say this because not only does Cilic typically
perform well in Cincy, but I too believe he’ll finally be in good form in this tournament. I see him getting through this section as
well. 2013 champ Rafael Nadal hopes to add to that
total starting of against either Christian Garin or Adrian Mannarino. He then could face David Goffin in the 3rd
round followed by either Coric or Nishikori in the quarters. In the semis he’s projected to face Zverev
or Thiem, and in the final Federer or Djokovic. Out of the big 3 Nadal’s section to me looks
the easiest. Minus Reilly Opelka nobody in his draw can
blast him off the court with any one shot, and I believe this will suit him well getting
through this. David Goffin and Kei Nishikori, are both solid
players but lack the weaponry to make Nadal truly uncomfortable. Thus, I see Nadal getting
through this match to face Cilic in the semifinals. In the finals i see Roger Federer and Marin
Cilic being the finalists with Roger being the eventual champion. Though Nole has the psychological edge coming
into the match, I think Roger should the match even happen between these two, will be focused
and determined to avenge that difficult Wimbledon match and will treat it of more importance. On the other hand I believe Marin will beat
Rafa due to Rafa’s body possibly not holding up after his deep Montreal run. He did too tell reporters that the heavy balls
in Montreal can be hard on ones elbow and wrist. I also think that Marin’s big game will
cause problems for Nadal as it generally has done in the past. In the finals I believe Roger will claim his
8th title beating Marin Cilic because of their two game styles and Roger being the comfortable
one in these big match situations. Roger leads their head 2 head 9-1 and in the
majority of their matches has been the one to dictate play. I don’t see much changing should they meet
again. As I mentioned the Cincy draw is filled with
popcorn matches, and these are the ones I think you should look out for. Thats all for this tournament preview. Do you agree with my picks and predictions? Leave your thoughts in the comment section
