Round 1 Action of the 2019 US Open is complete,
and I’ll give you a run down of what happened on Day 1 and Day 2 here on GS Tennis News
Today. Surprisingly there weren’t too many huge
first round upsets. On the womens side Sloane Stephens, Barbora
Strycova, Garine Muguruza Angie Kerber, and Carla Suarez Navarro all lost but was to be
expected due to the poor form they were in prior to the tournament starting. On the mens side we’ve had some minor upsets
with Guido Pella, Taylor Fritz, and Kyle Edmund Felix Auger-Aliassime all losing, but recently
we’ve had much bigger ones with Fabio Fognini falling to Reilly Opelka, Roberto Bautista
Agut losing to Mikhail Kukushkin, Karen Khachanov to Vasek Pospisil, Stefanos Tsitsipas to Andrey
Rublev, and Dominic Thiem to Thomas Fabbiano. Roberto Bautista Agut and Khachanov were shocking
due to their form coming into the open in comparison to their opponents. I actually predicted both Fognini and Rublev
to lose because I felt that their opponents Opelka and Rublev had the firepower and confidence
to take them out. Initially when I found out Dominic Thiem lost
I was very surprised but I would later find out that Domi was actually sick for 15 days
and only managed to practice for 2, so we hope he gets better so he can finish the season
strong in the indoor swing. In Stefanos’ match however there was a lot
of drama between him and the umpire. The ump told Stef that it was time to play,
but he was reaching inside of his bag for a headband and screamed at Dumusois that he
still needed time to change. He then warned the Greek that he would be
penalized. Heres some audio of his outburst. This was really weird and cringe to watch
because Stefanos has mainly trained at the Mourataglou Academy which is in France, and
the people in his player box including Patrick himself are mostly French so the outburst
just doesn’t add up at all. This kind of reminds me of him calling Medvedev
a bs Russian when his own mother is Russian so I guess that’s how Stef is. Tsitsipas, Thiem, and RBA were possible semifinal
opponents for 2nd seed Rafael Nadal while Khachanov was a quarters opponent but they
are all out so the draw is very wide open for the 18 time Grand Slam champ. He still has possibly Isner, Cilic, Verdasco,
or Chung to play before the final 8 so he needs to just stay focused on one match at
a time. Speaking of Rafa, he opened up his 2019 us
open campaign against Aussie John Millman beating him handily 3, 2, and 2. He’ll play another Australian player in
the second round against Thanasi Kokkinakis who won his first grand slam match today since
the 2015 French Open. Defending Champion Novak Djokovic also made
quick work of his first rounder Roberto Carballés Baena beating him 64 61 64. Instead of playing Sam Querrey in round 2
like many of us were anticipating, he’ll instead play clay courter Juan Ignacio Londero. 3rd seeded Roger Federer overcame a very slow
start beating Sumit Nagal 46 61 62 64. As expected he will play Damir Dzumhur in
the next one. Moving over to the womens side, the top seeds
though all advancing did so with great difficulty. Number 1 seed Naomi Osaka started her title
defense off with a very worrying start going down 4-1 to Anna Blinkova before recovering
to fin 5 games in a row, and the set 6-4. Naomi would resume her struggles in the second
set though as she would drop it in a tiebreaker. She then cleaned up her game to take the match
64 67 62. Ash Barty also had a slow start but actually
dropped the first set with a score of 6-1, before storming back to take the final 2 63
62 over Zarina Diyas. Though she wasn’t pushed to three, Karolina
Pliskova was still heavily challenged in a 76 76 victory over countrywoman Martincova. Reigning Wimbledon Champion Simona Halep had
to regain control in her opener against Nicole Gibbs clinching a 63 36 62 win over the American. A player that didn’t have too much difficulty
was Serena Williams as she demolished Maria Sharapova 61 61. We know that Serena always comes to play when
it comes to facing Sharapova, but last night she was on a whole nother level dominating
on her serve not dropping one game in that department, and on the return winning 62%
of receiving points. Serena wasn’t the only one from her family
making headlines during this match as her husband Alexis garnered a lot of attention
after wearing a DARE shirt which represents resistance to drug usage. Many though it was subtle shade towards Maria
due to her Meldonium Dilemma back in 2016. At first I agreed with these people because
Alexis not oblivious when it comes to people his wife has had confrontations with in the
past, but another Twitter user mentioned that Serena was actually in the DARE program as
a child and her dad helped raise funds for the program. A highly anticipated match that did live up
to the hype was Aryna Sabalenka vs Victoria Azarenka. These two had the ultimate Belarusian battle
going toe to toe providing us with show stopping tennis, but at the end the slightly more confident
player Aryna would hold off her countrywoman winning 36 63 64. The story of Day 2, was definitely Coco Gauff
completing a comeback win over fellow teen Anastasia Potapova, beating her 36 62 64. Coco was outplayed in the first set as the
Russian overpowered her but the American made necessary adjustments to take the second set
and a 4-1 lead in the third. At this point her opponent took a strategic
medical timeout for her shoulder which was very affective as she would then win three
games in a row, before Coco finally closed it out 6-4. The good news continues for Gauff as instead
of playing 28 seed Carla Suarez Navarro, she’ll play unseeded Hungarian Timea Babos. To close out the recap here are some matches
to look forward to heading into round 2. Are you surprised by any of the 1st round
results? If so leave a comment down below and make
