The number 11 Baylor men’s tennis team
hosted UMKC Saturday night in a doubleheader, beating the Kangaroos 7 to
0 in both matches. Baylor handled UMKC winning every singles match and
losing only one of the six doubles matches they played in route to their 2
and 0 start to the season. “But yeah you know, to get matches in is huge for us. You know, I think anybody was here saw that UMKC got a really good program. They won their conference last
year. They were competing their tails off and they made a hard for us and that was
great great for our young team to have a chance to go out there and go toe-to-toe
with them.” This year’s Baylor squad is young with four freshmen and two
sophomores. The freshmen played exceptional in their first college match
as they defeated their opponents in straight sets.
“Boy didn’t they fight today. I mean it was fun wasn’t it. I had a great time
seeing those guys. I thought, you know, several of them really rose to the occasion and just sort of embrace the dual match environment.” The team showed incredible
about of support for each other as they continuously cheered for their teammates
from their home court. “It didn’t matter that, you know, its the season opener or can be like the
NCAA Finals, we’re going to do the same thing matter what like how we support each
other.” “You know getting these matches and getting some success, everybody’s sharing that success was really just really important you know. We’ve got a big
challenge next weekend and I know we’re going to be really excited for it.” The
Bears will stay at home January 27th and 28th as they welcome UNLV, Florida
State and Purdue to Waco. Reporting for Lariat TV news, I’m Branson Hardcastle.
