TRADITION AT THE U.S. OPEN. BALL PERSONS WILL NOW HAVE TO MASTER SOME NEW MOVES. CBS 2’S CINDY HSU EXPLAINS FROM FLUSHING. Reporter: FOR 50 YEARS, THE BALL PERSONS AT THE U.S. OPEN HAVE THROWN THE BALL TO EACH OTHER TO CLEAR THE COURT. BUT THIS YEAR, THEY WILL BE ROLLING THE BALLS LIKE THEY DO AT ALL OUR GRAND SLAM TOURNAMENTS. OFFICIALS SAY IT’S A WAY TO BE MORE INCLUSIVE WHEN IT COMES TO BALL PERSON TRYOUTS. THAT GIVES MORE PEOPLE OPPORTUNITY WHO MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO THROW THE CHANCE TO TRY OUT AND BE A BALL PERSON. Reporter: EVERY YEAR A HUGE CROWD LINES UP TO TRY OUT. IT’S OPEN TO ALL AGE 14 AND OLDER. THE PAY IS MINIMUM WAGE AND THE TIME COMMITMENT IS ABOUT 10 DAYS. THIS YEAR, 500 PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO TRY OUT. ONLY 100 WILL BE CHOSEN. SO WHAT DOES IT TAKE? DEFINITELY REALLY IMPORTANT IS SPEED AND PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT’S GOING ON. YOU NEED TO BE ATHLETIC. HAVE STAMINA. Reporter: SO MY ASSIGNMENT, TRY OUT. MEET CATHY DELANEY ASSISTANT BALL PERSON DIRECTOR. HELLO. HI. HOW ARE YOU? I’M SCARED. OKAY. CINDY? YES. SO THINGS STARTED OUT OKAY. THEN IT WENT DOWNHILL. DO A LITTLE SHUFFLE. I EVEN HAD TROUBLE ROLLING THE BALL. THE EXPERIENCED BALL PEOPLE TRIED THEIR BEST TO SHOW ME HOW IT’S DONE AND THAT’S WHEN I HIT ROCK BOTTOM. 5 IS EXCELLENT. 1 IS THE WORST. ON THE HANDS AND AWARENESS, WE’RE BACK TO A 1. OKAY. SO AM I ABOUT THE WORST YOU HAVE SEEN? NO. REALLY? NO, NOT THE WORST. BUT I DON’T HAVE ANY FUTURE IN THIS? UM, MAYBE NOT THIS YEAR.
